i do make one heck of a goody bag

i may be the worst nanny ever----

seriously, i don't believe that--but a couple of things have me questioning, just what is a good nanny--

i hear my other grandchildren laden friends, talk of trips with theirs, weeks of them staying with them---

now of course, i know that some of them--are dealing with grand-kids that don't live close by---

the other day, it happened again---i was standing in a check-out line, when one lady starts up a conversation---i am buying a couple of toys for two of my granddaughters----she tells me she has three grandchildren--tells me the sexes and the ages and then asks me would i like to see her pictures of them---i did-----they were very cute----good thing, she was so involved in hers, that she did not inquire to see mine---for if she had, i would have been forced to attempt to find them in my great abyss of a pocketbook--or shamefully had to admit, i did not carry any photos of my dear seven grandchildren---

then just yesterday--robyn and i were chatting about something, when she interrupts me---"mom, wasn't dannon's birthday yesterday"----i tell you, it was like someone hit me in the gut!

now in my defense, her party is to be held this coming saturday---and the actual day of her birth---had been rather a busy one---helping with my dad----and returning home, tired---asked robyn to make me some noodle soup--the kind you put in the micro-wave-----but you must put water in it---

spent the rest of the afternoon--with the fans, trying to blow the horrid smelly smoke out of the house---

back to the realization, that i had not called my little granddaughter nor put up my customary pic on fb of said child or written the birthday status----

i immediately called her----telling her i was sorry i had not talked to her on her day----and asking her did she know how much nanny loved her----she quickly said she did and preceded to excitedly tell me what her mommy and daddy had given her---i assured her i had lots of goodies, waiting for the party saturday-

if i don't rectify the situation of the missing grandchildren pictures, the next time some over zealous granny wants to show me hers---i will simply tell her that i must have left them in my other purse

  1. Your granddaughter didn't mind and that is all that matters.
I felt silly Monday because it was my nephew's birthday and I thought it was but I wasn't QUITE sure so I had to ask my sister which she said was fine because the only reason she remembered my daughter's was because it came up on facebook.

  2. See at least she was so excited about the gifts she had gotten that she didn't even notice. I can't remember anyone's birthday. I rely on Facebook to remind me LOL

I forget birthdays all the time. Like Keith, I depend a lot on Facebook.

  6. You are so funny. I've seldom carried any pictures except one small snap shot of my daughters aged about six and eight. Someone asked me to produce ID once for a check (long, long ago) and stopped me as the picture flashed by. It was as good as photo ID! I lost that snap when my purse was stolen, and I assume the thief will spend eternity in H-e-double hockey sticks for it.

  7. Which reminds me, I need to get some pics over to my kids' grandparents. I bet you're an awesome granny! So even if you can't find their pictures in that suitcase you call a purse, they're still in your heart!

  8. I'll bet I can top you in the lousy granny department! (not that that's a good thing to outdo you on) I used to be so close to mine, but that has faded over recent years. In all fairness, it's not ALL my fault, but still, I'm guilty of pulling back in recent years and trying to avoid be over-attached, like I used to be. They seem do quite well without my involvement.

    1. awww no, that sounds really sad---i can understand pulling back, if you have experienced rejection---but most of the time---kids can gain so much from a good relationship from their grand-parents---i can't imagine you being a lousy anything :)

  9. You made me smile. I will be one of those who doesn't carry pictures. I've never carried pictures of my children in my purse. Kids know who loves and who doesn't and they don't care about pictures. I bet you're a great nana.

  10. Facebook has spoiled us. It's only an afterthought around October that I think I should get some family pictures printed for posterity. There's still some joy to be had turning pages of an album. It's often the first thing my grandchildren go for when they come visiting.
Reminds me! I've some family birthdays coming up.
You are a good Nanny, but the noodle soup had me laughing.

  11. It doesn't sound like you have to worry. They still know you love them, even if you don't carry pictures in your wallet, they are still in your heart.

  12. Well, I feel like a terrible mother because I don't carry any photos of my own kids in my purse lol. Oh, I do have the missing children id cards that the school sends home, but nothing that's really good. We all forget an important birthday from time to time. Don't beat yourself up over it. She sounds like she got over it pretty quickly :)
