just posting and thinking out-loud

i find myself up way too early--so thought i would try to post something, especially since i may be too busy the rest of the holiday weekend--

i haven't done my shopping for colin and kelli's cook-out yet---maybe tomorrow--

hmmmm i guess i am using my blog today as sort of a journal----well i hope you don't mind--

i have been wondering whether to re-post my short story "queenie's bequest"---i don't know if it is worth doing since if people really want to read it, they could go back and look for it---do people tend to do that---

plus each entry of the short story is longer than my usual posts-----also any of you bloggers that care to give me input----do you think it is wise to share the story on my blog---not just again but in general---

i am finding this writing thing a little tricky these days----i can't believe i am actually getting somewhat interested in the possibility of trying to get something published-----

i am also curious about this pinterest idea, some bloggers have been talking about--how you can advertize your blog on it----not sure how all of that works---i am on pinterest although since the az challenge, i have hardly logged on ---

someone--can't remember who---asked on their blog yesterday, "what are you passionate about"----

at one time i could have answered many different things----but i replied something like, i wasn't really passionate about anything, just my family----and that kinda made me feel weird, for just  about a minute--

then i thought---that's okay-----you don't have to lie or fake it, just be honest---nothing wrong about my passion being kinda limited at this moment in my life---

sure i enjoy writing ---but i am not sure i can say i am truly passionate about it---i mean i can leave it alone for months and not miss it-----but it does keep calling me back-

and i love my church, but i'm too old to fight my way in or out of anything these days-----not that there is much fighting---it's just that i am at the stage in my life---where i need to conserve my energy and time-----to things i feel God pushing me toward or leading me in----not to waste one more minute of the short time here, on any unnecessary useless battles or empty relationships--

haha sorry to get philosophical on ya---

you know---i do know something i could have really gotten into---and maybe still could-----having a playhouse you know small theatre---or been the principal at a performing arts school------

okay if you are still reading, i will try not to write in this journal--self-obsessed fashion, too often :)

  1. being passionate about your family is a good thing. Finding your own joie de vivre is also a good thing. Interesting topic to think about!

    Have a great long weekend!

  3. I would love to have a playhouse, it is something that is always in my list of things-I-would-do-if-I-won-the-lottery. It's a dream to do small, out-of-the-ordinary shows for little cost, just fun.

It's okay to be passionate about your family, I wish my mother was. I have a hard time having a conversation with her, let alone her having any passion. The other night I was in the middle of telling her about having my wisdom tooth pulled and she interupted me to say she had to go, "American Idol" was just too good to miss!! So there you have it, I love that you have a passion for your family, isn't that what's supposed to happen when our kids start having kids, if not before?

  4. Enjoyed sharing in your thoughts today, Lynn. The policy at one of the publications I write for, VISTA, is that whatever is published on a blog can still be offered as first writes, i.e. previously un-published. Other publications may view blogging differently. As for whether it is a good idea to post our stories and articles that we may one day want to publish--I look at it as an avenue that God can use to touch lives and since that is my goal with publication anyhow, it's all good! Blessings on your holiday!

  5. I did enjoy reading your random thoughts this morning, Lynn. Its kind of like what's in my head some days, a little of this, a little of that. Being passionate about family is a great thing I think! Our families are so important and pursuing time with them, loving them, spending time with them is what really matters at the end of the day (that and God of course as number one). I haven't done much on Pinterest; there are only so many hours in the day; but interesting about promoting blogs there.

    Enjoy the weekend :)

  6. Lucky you having a holiday weekend. Well, we have loads of holidays too (Portugal) so I can't complain. I love the thoughts in your head, it helps your readers get to know that you are a very nice person indeed :-) And keep following your heart's (God's) desire, best way.

  8. Hi Lynn - You asked: "i don't know if it is worth doing since if people really want to read it, they could go back and look for it---do people tend to do that---"

I'd say no, the typical blog visitor does not go back to read old posts unless you link to them in new posts. So if you want to share a story (even repeatedly after tweaking), then make it a new post.

If it's something you want to be picked up and published someday, then I wouldn't post it. Advice I've read says publishers aren't going to spend time/money on what has been put out there for free. But if you want to share your writing that you are not submitting for publication, it's a way to showcase yourself. Make sense?

Passion for family? What greater passion is there?

    Have a joyful weekend!

  9. Re-posting is a good way to revamp a story. My earlier postings were mainly newsy because that is what I did for a few years, an independent writer for my local paper. As the New Year was approaching I decided that my blog was getting a whole new change too. No one wants to really re-read the boring news. Often I still find a good news story worth retelling with a humorous "twist" as well as my adventures in menopause. :) I enjoy reading your postings and stories

I'm passionate about my relationship with God, my family, writing, shopping, decorating and eating. Ha.

  13. I think if you want to post your stuff online, you should. And if you're worried about the length of the posts, embed it in a document embedder. I use DocStoc and it's free, and there are several others (Scribd, etc.).

Good luck with your musings on writing, family, and life. I find that's the best way to make sure I'm spending the time I have on what it should be spent on.

  14. Nothing wrong with being passionate about your family. I have my husband, son, and my writing. My life feels full. :) You should try to get something published. You can go to Ralan.com to check out various anthologies or magazines. Whatever suits the story you want to try with them.

  19. I agree with Susan's comment. I just started pinterest. I think if you have a board with your book on it, or stuff related to your area of expertise, it can generate sales or traffic. For example, if I post a picture from one of my garden posts, it will lead back to my garden blog, and I'll get more traffic from anyone who clicks on it.

  20. I don't think everyone has to be passionate about everything. I am for sure passionate about writing and sometimes it takes over my life completely (which can be bad).
As for putting the story up again, you could just add the link to the original post to your next blog post. That way it is easily accessible for people who want to read it.
    Have a great weekend.

  21. Lynn it is okay to off load your doubts from time to time, writer's need to I think. Have you considered joining Alex J. Cavanaugh's "Insecure Writers Support Group?" Once a month all my doubts and frustrations are shared with others in the group and we support each other along the way!

You should give it a try!

  24. Journal entries are fun and cleanse the palate I think. I have mixed feelings about short stories. A lot of times I'll go to a blog and they've posted one but I'm on my 30th blog visit that day and I don't quite feel the energy to read it. Sometimes I start and I'm sucked in and I couldn't stop if I wanted to. Sometimes I don't make it a paragraph which is sad because it's not necessarily a bad story, I'm just tired. How did it go last time you posted?

    1. well the last time i posted it the people that had said they read it, did not comment on my blog because they did not have a google account---but they told me on facebook, where i had put a link--how much they liked it etc.----thanks for your insights, libby!

  25. I have always felt I have a purpose in life but I'm bemused as to what it might be. I don't know why why I have the feeling, it's just there.

Many bizarre things have happened in my life and I can't compare it to any friends or anyone else I know. Perhaps it's my imagination, who knows? It's been 'entertaining' finding out.

I have long since given up on planning things and could go into a Rumsfeldt speech about 'known unknowns...' but I have learnt to trust my instincts. They are not infallible but they have served me well.

I would suggest you do the same as you suggested to me when I started to have doubts :P

  26. Bogging IS a place to share your thoughts! Blog comes from the words web and log, meaning a journal - run together from web-log, comes "blog." And you do it beautifully! I love hearing your thoughts too. And I'm with you, and so many other comments here - it's beautiful to have your family as your passion! Not enough people love and nurture their own family. God bless you, girl!
