prom confessions

i don't think i will be posting anything new until probably monday unless i just can't help myself!

tomorrow is robyn's testing and then the prom and then good old mother's day--i think we have already been over this haven't we--

do you want to know something else about me--and in this day and time, it is kinda embarrassing --but i have never been to a prom---you see now days---it is like the thing to do---and it's like you have missed out on one of life's moments, if you don't attend a prom at least once--

back in my day, it was not cool to go to prom--at least not in the group i hung out with---not sure what group that was---i was part of the theatre group--but i think some of those kids went--but i was on the fringe of several other groups, non of which, would have dare darkened the halls of a school prom-----it was like a rite of passage to not go------

a little history---i was in a school the last two years of high school, that had just experienced the first and second year of school busing---things were not all that calm at the school i attended--i was even beaten up once by a girl at that----it was turbulent times and racial tension was at a fevered pitch---still i wanted to be there, not really at school but in the midst of history in the making---i was given the choice of going to a private school like my brother did---but not a chance----and i wouldn't take any of it back--i think-

i have recently joined a facebook page, for alumni---i don't know too many people on the page but have reconnected with a few ---i think most all of the people on the page would have most surely been at the proms----most of the members are from years ahead of my years at school--had i been a junior and senior at another time in history---i may have several bad pictures of bad prom dresses to remember too and maybe an old corsage pressed in a book somewhere --

i hope robyn will enjoy her prom as much as they seem to on glee and other tv shows and in many peoples distant recollections of those days for them-----i don't think i have ever really grieved the awful fact that i missed all of my proms----and you know something i have never thought of--i wonder if my mom missed me not going and not having the fun of picking out the perfect prom dress----sorry mom-----and happy mother's day to all of you---have a great weekend<3

  1. Happy Mother's Day to you as well!

I went to three proms, and while they were fun and I had a great time getting dressed up, I really can't remember much else about them. I don't know if that's because I'm getting old or if they just weren't that memorable. LOL

  2. What an interesting time with when you went to school; a lot of history there, of course at the time you might not have thought years later it would be of interest or history was being made. I didn't go to any proms either; did go to one formal dance, but not any proms and certainly not my senior prom. Did I miss it? Then I did, but looking back, not really. I do hope though that Robyn does enjoy her prom!

All I can say about Mother's Day, it will pass, it will be hard, it will be better next year, (but it will still "suck").

  4. If it helps Lynn I too did not go to my prom. My mom is Amish. I wasn't raised in Amish Country just a mom with all of those Ideals and traditions and dancing was definitely against all of those traditions.:) And Happy Mother's Day to you too

  6. How interesting that going to prom was not cool back then. I went to two (ironically, not to my own school's prom). It's like homecoming, but with fancier dresses. I hope Robyn enjoys her prom. Happy Mother's Day to you!

  7. Well, you're not alone! I didn't go to mine either, tho' I sure wish the guy I had a crush on would've asked me...he didn't go either. Back in the day when the girl didn't ask I guess, tho' I wouldn't have anyway!
I was looking through some recent prom pictures. I didn't realize they color coordinate with each other. Wow!

  8. I'm with you :) We don't really have proms here. We try to but they are never like on US tv shows! I skipped a summer highschool prom attempt thing and then went to an end of school prom/ball. It wasn't very exciting or like what we'd seen on TV so I feel like I missed the prom thing too!

I hope Robyn enjoys her prom! :)

  9. When I went to high school, here in Canada, we didn't have prom, but we had a graduation party. We all got dressed up, went for dinner, then to the dance, but the best part was someone, usually someone living in the country, would have an all night party, and then a breakfast. No one really cared about the dinner dance thing, but we all had a blast at the party after. I'm glad I went, even though I don't remember much!

I hope Robyn enjoys her prom! And happy Mother's day!

  11. Prom is a funny phenomenon which, unchecked, invariably grows to mythic proportions. I'm with you, Lynnie, I did not attend my senior prom -- but I do so hope that Robyn fully enjoys hers.

    Have a great weekend, too.

  12. I went to my junior and senior prom with my now-husband... Don't worry, you really didn't miss much. It's like every school dance you've ever attended, just with prettier dresses and very very uncomfortable boys. The only thing I really remember is that my husband looks just a little bit like a gorilla when he dances anything but slow dances. Don't tell him I said that.

  14. Yeah, looking back after fifty years have passed, prom was not an event I remember as a high point of my life. One of the dresses was pretty cool though. :D

  15. I agree with Patricia. I think my sister saved our prom dresses for years. I was not in the "in" group at school so high school was not the glory years for me. But. . .20 years later, I met my second-husband-to-be at our reunion and we are still together.

  16. Ah, the prom years. I remember them well. Since I was kind of dorky--old fashioned word for not being very popular--those were very interesting times. Hope robyn has a great experience.

  17. yes our high school years were very interesting huh---thanks i sure hope she does:)

  18. No matter how far away from it we get, we never really let go of high school, do we?

I hope that your daughter has a great prom!

  22. Prom is highly overrated. I didn't go. I can care less. I doubt it would've been a defining moment for me. I know a lot of women who went to prom and it was either no big deal or awful. I have no regrets. :)
    Happy Mother's Day.

  23. I went to two proms (as a freshman and as a junior), and then skipped in my senior year. Would I go again? Eh... I don't seem to have any remarkable memories. But I do have a leftover peach gown that makes me look like Glinda the Good Witch. LOL!

Oh, and the party I went to instead of the prom during my senior year? Now that night created some good memories. ;)

  24. well it sounds like a lovely gown---haha good party huh, tracy ;)

  25. I didn't go to the proms. Too much pomp and such for me. I'd rather spend the money and time on a dinner and movie date.

  26. I went to an all girl Catholic school so we had to ask a boy to our prom. My date cancelled two weeks before prom and to top things off I found out that someone else had the exact same dress. I went out and since it was so late in the season all I could do was exchange it for another dress....One that I didn't really like...Boy was I stupid!
Great post! I hope your daughter has an awesome time!
    Blessings, Joanne

  27. We all have things we need to grieve. The cool thing is that you can name it, help your daughter with her experience, and even use your imagination to create the perfect scene for yourself, (because probably no prom is ever perfect).

  28. Looking back...proms are really stupid. They are all about the wrong things, appearance, who's dating whom, who's cool and who's not. It's just silly. I went to both junior and senior proms, neither were enjoyable. You didn't miss anything! :-) Hope your Mother's Day was great! Better than any prom!
