the bath mat

i hit my leg this morning on the side of the tub---i was stepping in and the mat slipped, sending my leg that was outside of the tub, into the side of the hard plastic---you wouldn't think it would have hurt so much--but it did---it made a loud enough noise, that it sent robyn running in to check on me-------i have quite a knot and bruise---but i think i will make it---

the only reason it freaks me out just a little, is because it is the leg i have had a "dvt" in before---

the only other time i have hurt that leg since the dvt was when my son's doggy pulled me down the front steps while i was holding her leash---landing me onto the ground and slates-----i had a huge knee for a while but managed to be okay----

i had my dvt back in '91 a couple of weeks after my son carter was born----they say it was from the c-section--that it is always a chance of having a blood clot after any surgery-----

i remember the night i discovered something was wrong with my leg----as i went to go up the stairs to bed--i realized my right leg was hardly working and my knee was hurting-----it was feburary and i had jogging pants on---as i sat on the side of my bed i could barely get the pants leg off---then is when i saw how big my leg was--it had to be three times the size of the other leg----

i stayed in the hospital for a week----they said i was lucky i didn't lose my leg and that the majority of people never have any symptons until it is too late-----

i will never forget how hard it was to miss my kids, especially my newborn ----it was an awful time in my life----my daughter eden had just passed away a little over two weeks before my son carter was born-----

i didn't really plan for this blog to take this path today----

i guess my nasty bump and bruise just brought all the memories and fears of  some very dark days in my past----

i am going to get a new bath mat later today--

  1. Yes, new bath mat and step gingerly in. It's when we're not thinking of the immediate task we're doing that this happens. I speak from experience. (my lower back is my problem, so I walk a lot)

Be careful with that knee, take care of yourself. Remember, mobility is something to be treasured. I'm reminded of that every time I visit my MIL in the care home.

    Heartfelt post.

  3. It is just natural to have those feelings come creeping in around the edges with those memories. Perhaps, with your history, you might give your doctors office a quick call and run it past them..it wouldn't really harm anything and would put your mind at rest. xo

  5. Go out and pick up a crazy bathmat...something that makes you smile every time you see it! And make sure it is non-skid!!! I now always have the phone on the floor by the shower if I'm home alone! That way I could most likely reach it while on the floor. The things we have to think of! I should really scatter phones in various places on the floor around the house! Who knows where we will end up falling someday?
Praying for you and a rebound from both the fall and the memories.

  6. oh, I'm sorry that happened. I bet it really was painful and, of course, now you're worrying about more serious things. I don't know what you should do...put your leg up? ...but I do hope all's well. X

  8. Get that new bath mat, pronto! Don't laugh... I did something very similar a few months ago, only I was leaning over the the tub. I went in head first, striking my head on the faucet as I went down, my shoulder hit the tub stopper upper thingy and I managed to get some hair ripped out on the handles. I suffered for a while, but it could have been so much worse!

Hope your knee is okay. :-)

  11. How frightening. And it's easy to see why this one thing could lead to thoughts of other unhappy moments. And I agree with everyone else, a new bathmat is definitely in order.

  13. Sounds like you've had it rough. I've never been a fan of bath mats and have never had one in my own house. All I could remember was my mothers' bathmat leaving impressions on my butt.

  15. Keep an eye on that leg. :-) I know you will. It's scary to have a flashback like this. I've had back surgery due to a slipped disc/sciatica, and everytime I get a little back twinge, I freeze with the memory of the past pain/surgery/rehab. I feel your pain. Put that leg up and read. :-)

  18. I'm glad to hear this little slip wasn't so serious. Having the dvt must have been terrifying, especially when you found out the risks.

  19. Oh Lynn, I'm so sorry about the events that happened around the time Carter was born; I am so sorry about Eden; I can't imagine the sorrow you felt, yet the joy of a new life, yet the pain with the DVT and the not being with Carter. I can see why something like what you did with the bath mat and the injury caused would stir up those memories of years ago.......

    hugs to you!

  20. As a former medical transcriptionist, I couldn't count the number of times I have read about deep vein thrombosis. The overwhelming majority of surgeons insure that their patients receive DVT prophylaxis.

I trust you will keep an eye on that leg. It reminds me of an old Russian writer, who's name is on the tip of my tongue, who's protagonist hit his side on a door knob, which eventually wound up killing him. Looking back, I wonder if he had DVT, as it is more than a leg issue.

    1. -i was on treatment for years and was tested and found not to be predisposed to blood clots----wow that is scary about the protagonist---but you have to surely be careful with any signs of a dvt, although the signs are rare that lead one to think it is a dvt----thanks for your thoughtful comment jeremy :)

  22. Ouch! That sounds very painful. I'm the kind of klutz that will hit every doorway as I go into a room. It amazes me my uncanny ability to NOT calculate the appropriate space I need to go through without hitting my shoulders or knees. It's either that, or I still haven't get used to how fat I am...

Smile and get a funky mat. Memories sometimes threaten to swallow us but just keep moving ahead without looking back. As long as you can laugh, things will eventually get better.

    My best wishes.

  23. Oh please be careful, the tub can be a tricky area, I found out after I had my meniscus fixed in my right knee, not as well balanced as I used to be.

Amazing how our health can turn in the blink of an eye, that's why we always have to enjoy the good times when they are around, take care.

  27. Ouch on that. My grand kiddy recently dumped a 3oz bottle of vitamin e oil in my tub w/o me knowing. I had the shower running for a minute and stepped in and went on the ride of my life. :( TG the wall on the other side broke my fall, but my leg hit the tub and left a pretty nice scrape. Definitely when he is here in the future, the bathroom is off limits for him when a grown up is not present. Hope you had no ill effects from this.
