SPAGHETTI HELL
this morning as i am making my spaghetti sauce---i again am reminded of this long ago post---i had asked my dad to come over for dinner tonight and he accepted, only to call me this morning with the request for a "rain-check"----oh sure, it's fine---if he only knew----you know the food issues i have---well when i make my semi homemade sauce, it really rears it's ugly strange head----part of it is i cannot see the expiration dates very well on the jars, i add to my sauce and thus the craziness of spaghetti hell begins......
this part starts the repost
i am right now preparing spaghetti sauce --but the ? is why ( by the way my knee is better-probably wasn't good for it standing up chopping away )
a couple of weeks ago i decided to make spaghetti for my daughter-in-law's b-day dinner- great idea right-- not!! figured it would be easy and didn't have the money to take everyone out to eat- in comes my son and his family of 6 ready to eat. i had used a really BIG pot for the noodles-my husband almost burned himself trying to pour out the water--steam filling the kitchen till you could hardly see the grand-kids as they asked--"can i have garlic bread"--"i don't like spaghetti"--"hey nana you know what i want for Christmas"--and "hey do you have anymore of those blue drinks"--"can i sit at the bar" (counter, they like to call it bar ).
i thought it would be nice to put the spaghetti on a big platter and serve it home style- but first i had to get the noodles out with the tongs that were conveniently in the one drawer that was stuck like nobody's business! yeah it was going great!
so that's why i say to all that- i would not make the stupid mistake of having spaghetti when extra people were coming over
but here i am making my sauce for my dinner with my parents---they say insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting different results----CALL ME CRAZY

I was at basket ball last night talking with my friend. She was going over what she had made for dinner...1 and a half pounds of spaghetti, garlic bread, over 40 meat balls, sauce.... and that's just for her family (of 9).... I laughed and said, "I thought I was tired, all I did was open two cans of tuna and throw some nuggets in the oven for Tony." :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your dinner.
see i am a freak!!!---thanks juli ;)
DeleteI hate cooking...I'm impressed you even attempted, let alone tried again. I try hard not to invite people for food...I invite for games instead! :)
ReplyDeletewell i do love to cook---my problem is the shopping and the inspection of food---remember i am a little crazy---games sound good--thanks rebecca ;)
DeleteYikes! Whenever I'm cooking for more than just the family, I always worry something will go wrong. So stressful...
ReplyDeleteGood luck today!
yeah---if i just wasn't such a weirdo about the dates etc.--but for sure spaghetti is not a crowd dinner unless you have a crowd helping you--thanks dana :)
DeleteI hate to cook but love to have my family over for meals.
ReplyDeleteSphagetti. Yum.
T
haha--that does present a problem--but there is always take-out huh teresa ;)
DeleteI know why you keep pulling out the same dish. Because deep within, you know you can make a fantastic spaghetti sauce, if you're allowed time. Get everyone else into another room (have someone else do this) and only those actually working on the meal are allowed in til you deem it so. Short visits ok (to grab drinks). Sometimes, it has to be done.
ReplyDeletehaha no i actually only added the grand-kids part for human interest and to hopefully make it a little humorous, although all quite true----and i do make a mean sauce,---but i am more the type that should have a sous-chef --thanks d.g. :)
DeleteI'm a terrible cook but it's ok because a) my friends know I can't cook, b)all of my friends like cooking for other people and are good at it, and c) I'm very good at buying snacks and alcohol. ;-)
ReplyDeletehaha i am sure i could be good at that also---just not to good at the drinking part--maybe cause i used to be so good at it (many moons ago)----thanks ermie ;)
DeleteCooking for a crowd is definitely not fun. You are a brave lady!
ReplyDeletewell i don't do it too often---and is brave another word for crazy--haha thanks sherry :)
DeleteBut spaghetti is so . . .easy! haha. IF they only knew!
ReplyDeletei know right!!!haha thanks judy ;)
DeleteYou made me laugh. My family loves spaghetti and we always have to have some garlic bread.
ReplyDeleteoh yeah us too--it's cooking right now---haha i am glad i made you laugh--thanks susan :)
DeleteSpaghetti is one of my favorite things to make for groups. Much easier than anything else I might try to fix. I'm not much for cooking.
ReplyDeletethat's what i hear ms. a---haha---i like to cook but actually have many of the same reactions, no matter what the menu is ;)
DeleteThere was a scene in a movie about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz where he cooks a huge pot of spaghetti for their celebrity friends. By the time he carries it out to their guests the intense heat burns a hole through the pot, and it all comes pouring out on their dining room floor. Then an actress portraying comedy legend Carole Lombard (Clark Gable's wife) asks the maid when she last cleaned, and graciously starts digging in with a fork. See it could always be worse.
DeleteJulie
haha that sounds hilarious--yep it could be worse julie ;)
Delete*LOL* Thanks for the laugh! I'm a big spaghetti fan myself.
ReplyDeletei am too christine--as a matter of fact years ago, monday was spaghetti night--thank goodness i got over that though ;)
DeleteHee hee. Every time I clean my house I expect it to stay clean. Now that's insanity.
ReplyDeleteShannon at The Warrior Muse
haha ya got me there shannon--jk ;)
DeleteSpaghetti is one of those meals that I seem to use every single pot and pan for, its delicious, but messy with lots of clean up. However, now I want some.....
ReplyDeletebetty
haha i know what you mean betty---it is good but messy--especially the noodle part---as i don't like to really add all of the sauce at once--hence my noodles either get really greasy or really sticky :)
DeleteI feel for your hubby, I've steam burned myself and water burned myself making spaghetti. No fun. But still tasty!
ReplyDeleteyeah---lesson learned---never try to do too many noodles at once, if you are going to drain them---it was tasty libby :)
DeleteIt's almost like having kids, isn't it? You go through hell, then time passes and it doesn't seem so bad anymore. Then, you get a hair brained idea to do it again, ending in the same results. I'm sure you'll be making that spaghetti again ;)
ReplyDeletehaha that's a great analogy theresa---oh yeah i am sure i will be making it again--it's so good and cheap!!
Deletepasta always SOUNDS easy, but you never know. Order in pizza - you can't go wrong with that one. :-)
ReplyDeletehaha i know---my dad doesn't usually want pizza---but oh yeah--a great choice for me!--thanks mare :)
DeleteThe luck I have with spaghetti sauce and pasta is that it will never taste good the day I have it for company and surely I'll overcook the pasta and it will be my only package of pasta in the pantry! Happy New Year Lynn :-)
ReplyDeletehaha--yeah i have been coming up short on the pasta part--i think they need to come up with a middle size box---happy new year to you monica :)
DeleteI am such a good guest because I know how much work went into having people over, but not a good cook/hostess -- I worry and do not enjoy any part of it. I would be a great guest and would love every bite of your spaghetti.
ReplyDeletehaha---thanks, i would love to have you over to dinner--i wouldn't be nervous--cause you already know my craziness :)
DeleteThat's very nice of you to host your daughter-in-law's bday dinner. Speaking of spaghetti sauce "challenges," just ask me about the time when I let the sauce boil in the saucer with the lid off...
ReplyDeletei enjoy hosting all the big kids birthday dinners!---do tell--sounds like a messy story cynthia ;)
DeleteThe title of this post totally cracked me up! :-) You're braver than I am. I will NOT make anything that makes me panic or doesn't usually cooperate with me when we're having company for dinner. I make really good quesadillas, but never for company because the kitchen turns into a steamy, smokey mess every time I make them. I hope everyone enjoyed the spaghetti you worked so hard on.
ReplyDeletehaha thanks danielle, i am glad you appreciated my dramatic title ;)
