hot dogs and hamburgers

since today has the promise of 85 degrees and it is "h" day---i can't help but think of cook-outs and summertime---so naturally, hot dogs and hamburgers are on the menu in my head--

we actually don't cook out that much---usually memorial day weekend, which is when we celebrate colin and kelli's birthdays and 4th of july----sometimes labor day----but just in everyday life, we are known to have a hot dog here and there------

as a matter of fact, one of robyn's favorite meals, is my famous "hot dog hash"----now wait, it's better than it sounds----it's cut up hot dogs, potatoes and onions--fried with lots of oil---my mom used to make it quite often---

but today i would like to talk about, the usual way we eat them both, on buns with lots of toppings---

my favorite ways to eat a hot dog on a bun would be between three choices---just mustard and sweet pickle relish---sauerkraut and spicy mustard or cheese and chili-----

when i do entertain with hot dogs and hamburgers, i really get into having these things on my condiment tray----onions, diced and sliced, cheese slices, of course catsup, maybe three kinds of mustards--relish--pickle spears, bread and butter slices--oh and tomatoes-----and mayo for dustin-----lettuce sometimes--

frank would love hot peppers, but we usually don't have them---

so just having a little fun today, thinking of food and family----

tell me, which do you prefer, a hot dog or a hamburger and what do you top them with!

  1. I am a 'no condiments' person. I never put anything on hotdogs and only cheese on my hamburger. My kids are mostly the same though they will use some ketchup or onions now and again.

    1. yeah, i can eat a hot dog plain, esp. if it's burned---yep, i love just cheese sometimes on my hamburger, susan!

  2. I definitely am a hamburger person, though I do not each much beef. Toppings are carmelized onions and gorgonzola cheese. My favorite cook-out item is smoked pulled pork. My neighbor is already asking when I am going to make it again, but with possible snow on Thursday night, it won't be anytime soon. 85? I can only dream at this point.

  5. You've made me hungry and it's only 9:30am. I love both equally, although I can no longer partake in either. Cheese and chili on my dogs, loaded on my burgers!! We have a wonderful family owned drive-in 50's style place near where we live that make the best of both, that is a summertime tradition for us!

  6. Yum, you've got me thinking about summer while we are having a snow day here in Colorado. We cook out a ton, even in winter. So easy to throw some meat on the grill. Enjoy the warm weather!

  7. I love both, but I have been known to request hot dogs for my birthday dinner! Lots of ketchup, mustard, and sweet pickle relish, usually too much, so it drips onto my plate. Delish!

  9. I love cook outs in the spring and summer---on days that it's not scorching out. I usually go for a burger- hot dogs have too much 'stuff' in them. LOL My dad is bringing super dogs down this weekend. Now those are hard to pass up!

  10. I like to go for one of each! I top my hot dog with ketchup, shredded cheese if it is available and diced onion. I prefer to my burgers to have any cheese that is not American cheese, I just don't like it for some reason... too creamy or something. And I am a mayo girl ALL the way, no miracle whip for me! I can't wait until it is warm enough to grill here, we grill as much as possible! -ejw

  17. haven't heard that song in a very long time. Fun.
When i was a kid - my brother and i would take a bus into town to swim - on the way back we stopped at a place called "Foxy Dog.' You could buy a hot dog - then, go to a food island in the center of the room - where they had too many topping to count . . . anything you could thing of would be there to choose . . . it was - an experience.

  19. It's snowing here, so no cookouts! Yet.... No ketchup on a hot dog is really my only stipulation. Other than that anything goes! Love sweet relish on it all. Cheddar cheese is best, but any kind will do EXCEPT cheese FOOD. It would. Be so nice to have a grilled hot dog right now.

    1. you reminded me donna, how my mom would make a slit in the hot dogs and fill them with cheddar cheese,---i know, with our nice weather, i can't believe we didn't grill---maybe this weekend as we are suppose to have nice weather although not as warm as today--sorry don't mean to rub it in ;)
