karaoke

at our church we occasionally have a karaoke  night-----everyone always enjoys it and sometimes it's hard to get them to stop singing and let us pack up the machine and go home haha

but this one time, our little karaoke night proved to be very controversial---

we decided to have it as a kinda coffee house, karaoke night blend

it went off very well---until the Sunday afterwards--

at the start of the morning worship service---this rather large, loud african american self-proclaimed pastor, came barging in, demanding to take over the pulpit and speak----it was quite a scene and no one knew what to do----

to let you know a little about our church, we are an old church that is in the inner city----yes we are predominately white but our church members include and welcome all races-----most of our church is older people, but they are very loving and would never intentionally hurt someone

back to the man----he was obviously a little mentally unbalanced but intent that he must speak to the evil devil racist church we were----in fact a church that he knew had just held a klu klux klan meeting---

well i can tell you we were all astonished and someone went to call the police-----

before the police arrived, several men were able to get the man outside to talk-----as they did, the man proclaimed, that he had proof that we had indeed held the kkk meeting at our church---he reached in his pocket, as the men started to lunge----he pulled out a piece of paper,----

my husband being one of the men outside with him---took the piece of paper and was speechless----it was one of our flyers, advertizing the coffee night to the community---

as frank took a look at the what we thought was a clever way to put it, he saw the misunderstanding---

please come to our KARAOKE KOFFEE HOUSE-------  the man said the "h" in house was only used to disguise the true meeting's agenda----we now advertize our youth coffee house, only with a "c"

  3. As for karaoke, I can dance I can talk ... but sing I cannot, unless there 10 or so others singing with me and can drown my voice in theirs.

  4. Wow, that's disturbing. Just like anything else, there will be some people who make something out of what we intend for something else.

Very scary though the whole episode.

  6. I've always been alternately fascinated and frightened by karaoke. It's quite a leap from Karaoke Koffee House to KKK, though. Goes to show that sometimes what we see is what we look for.

  7. Funny and scary all at the same time. So glad they were able to calm him down and clear up the misunderstanding. I guess it goes to show you that jumping to conclusions is never a good idea....always ask some questions first!

  8. I think Karaoke is an acquired taste. Anyone that's accustomed to reading music from the sheet probably struggles with it like me. No, I don't want a bouncing ball to tell me when to sing. I want to see the written timing and perform it exactly! (kicking the music snob back into her box...)

That's insane. Isn't it crazy how people see what they want to see?

  9. So many of our older people are troubled. This gentleman probably has some form of dementia, the anger, etc. Your husband had so much control. Consider what happens now when someone reaches into their pocket.

  10. Some people just think the world is out to get them. It's sad and ridiculous!

Karaoke is one of my biggest fears. I can't sing a lick to save my life. No way would I do it in front of others lol.

    1. it is sad---and about karaoke---even the people that can sing, usually don't sound too good when they do karaoke---that's the time to sing haha--go for it theresa :)

    Funny, Lynn.

  14. Oh, what a terrific story. I DO Understand it was a one of a kind, concerning moment . . BUT, the story potential is WAY UP THERE . . . IF you are writing a play, book, story , song, sermon . . This post is Golden.
    Thank you for sharing this,
    Love & Love,

  15. I never thought that Karaoke and coffee could ever be associated with the KKK. I guess your story is a testament to how words, even seemingly harmless words, could be interpreted in a variety of ways.

  23. The best of us can often misinterpret information. Flipping through the TV channels I could not understand how they had a show called 'Porn Stars'. It was 'Pawn Stars'. Maybe I need glasses?

  24. Oh my, how frightening. I'm just getting to your number on the A-Z list, hello Lynn! I think we met at LAST year's A-Z. For K, I wrote about Karaoke too. :-) So glad the misunderstanding at your church was resolved. Yes, maybe correct spelling is more important than we think!
