picnics

i have been thinking about taking my dad, soon, to visit some of our loved ones graves----they are about and hour or so away----i was also thinking it might be nice to pack a picnic lunch-

i love the thought of picnic food but rarely make one---

a few stand out----years ago, we took the kids down to the park in our neighborhood, where there is a pavillion and a pond----we had a great day---the two oldest boys fished and we had lots of special picnic foods, including fudge brownies-

another picnic that i recall--started with a lovely picnic array of foods, but we got so hungry, that, unable to find a spot to eat, we ended up eating in a convience store lot----but we particularly enjoyed the hard-boiled eggs--

occasionally we will stop and get chicken with the fixings and head out to a lovely park in our town--

but when i think of a real picnic--i think of preparing my own foods-

i guess the last really good picnic our family had, was one in the mountains---i remember bringing so much food--i couldn't stop myself----

we had all kinds of sandwich stuff---pickles-chips-cookies-fresh fruit-potato salad ---well it seemed like more---

so i might just do, it---shoot, i might just go crazy and make my grandmother's famous fried chicken---

what goodies do you pack on your picnics?

  1. Oh my goodness, I can't remember the last picnic I went on. We barbecue here a lot and eat outside, but I never think about packing anything up to go someplace else and eat. Maybe it's because I already live in an outdoor setting on a private park.

  2. We used to picnic as a family once in a while. THe staple was marshmallows...get em all black over a fire! Now my picnic take along is my favorite sandwich...Its an avocado and swiss with hummus and a slice of tomato and sprouts on whole wheat. Not a marshmallow but almost as good!

  3. The usual, sandwiches and chips. But I know many people that bring wine grapes and cheese. Course those people don't have two boys in tow.

  4. Our four boys love picnics. And so do I! :) Some things we bring: fruit kabobs, cheese cubes, carrots with ranch, chicken, sub sandwiches, deviled eggs, muffins, and cookies. Of course this isn't all for one trip lol. These are just things we've done before. Also, we bring a football, gloves and baseballs, fishing gear, and blankets.
I can't wait for summer so we can go again! ^_^

  5. One thing my husband and I always brought on our picnics was stove popped popcorn. It reminded us of being kids and our moms filling paper grocery bags with popcorn and heading to the drive-in movies. And it was cheaper than buying bags of chips!

  6. As with Denise, I live in a "picnicky area" even sitting at my table where I'm working now. Yesterday as I was eating my lunch a deer went by the window, and shortly after that a turkey came through. So we don't often go for a picnic.
BUT when we do, it is usually spur of the moment, at a little stream about an hour away. There's a grocery store nearby and we grab some food and sit by the stream and eat. But I have to say, I prefer eating indoors. I'm not much for bugs with my food. I always wanted to be like Heidi though and eat cheese and bread in the mountains! Now there's a picnic!

  8. I haven't gone on a "real" picnic since I was a child. They were so much fun! My mom would pack sandwiches and everything that went with them. There's just something about eating outside.

The kids and I have been enjoying a lot of picnics on our living room floor, but I hope to move them outside now that the weather is starting to warm up. :)

    1. oh i know, the picnics on the floor are special too---almost every time the grand-kids come over, they want pizza and they have it on a blanket on the floor in front of the tv :)

  9. Fried chicken seems like a picnic must have, but we like to go to places where we can cook over a fire or that has fireplaces to cook on so we can do hotdogs and burgers along with the other goodies like macaroni or pasta salad.

  11. Yes, fried chicken is a great choice. I don't go to picnic very often these days ... but when on the road we like to pack home prepared food to eat at the R&R. Fried chicken with rice, and some fruits. Now that you have put up the idea, Lynn, a picnic might what we need to do, very soon.

    1. oh yeah, i like to take snack stuff on small road trips too--i remember when i was a kid--we would go to the beach for a few days---we would always start our journey before daylight--so mom would pack our breakfast--we would barely get out of town before we were begging dad to pull over so we could eat--always got to have coffee, and sausage or cheese biscuits!!

    2. Wow! Now you are telling us about childhood days traveling, we can write another series of A-Z, Lynn ;) But you are so right about how much fun it was, as kids, and having our meals on the road. Lovely topic indeed.

  13. We are big picnic fans--whether it's the cookout route with corn, hot dogs, burgers, etc or just the sandwich route (chicken salad, lunch meats, etc), I definitely have a tendency to go WAY overboard trying to make sure there's something for everyone and enough of everything. But I love going to a state park about an hour from home and just spending the whole day with the meal as the centerpiece of the day. So ready for the weather to warm up enough to break out the coolers. :)

  14. you sound like me--i tend to go overboard when i finally have a picnic---mmmm thanks for reminding me--chicken salad, one of our favs!!
