m is for mundane

there are so many things in our day to day life that are routine, have to be done each day—kinda leaves you feeling that ground-hog thing—kinda mundane things---what are some of the things you could do to lessen the mundane effect---i have found a few ways through the years, so i thought i would share mine--

this may sound a little odd but i hate to shower—now i do it every day—as a matter of fact i could not leave the house without doing it----but it is something I actually dread---so

i used to take that time in the shower to pray extra, but recently i have used the time to sing, mostly in my head, sometimes out loud---praise songs and hymns---this gives God the glory and keeps me from worry praying--

laundry---while taking them out of the dryer, i take the chance to smell most items as they have the most wonderful fragrance, fresh from the heat----while folding them---i take note of whose, shirt it is, sorta keeping a running idea, of who has the most laundry pieces--

okay and this is really out there so stay with me---when washing the dishes---i know, does anyone still do that—there is a mechanical reason, i do this chore—but actually i do not mind doing the dishes---when i was a kid, my two older sisters got to wash and i always had to dry, which i despised---sorry, back to my point---when i wash my utensils, i wash them one by one, waiting until i have four in my hand and then rinse- i imagine that the spoons are women, the forks, boys and the knives men—so none of these families have girls, in them---which gives me an idea—the serving spoons can be the moms and...well you get the premise--

if you are still reading, i will offer one more example---and i truly don't think this one makes me look like a nut----while dusting, i reminisce about where i purchased each item or who gave me such and such----

i hope this has helped someone, who struggles with the mundane things we all must tackle each day---or at least made you feel saner than someone else--

  5. I know what you mean Lynn (I loved your simile on my blog, btw ! ). I get bored stiff brushing my teeth, for example he he. Things that have to be done. Now, housework ugh...I get in such a bad mood, but if I listen to music while I'm doing it, then it gets done in no time. Good "M" letter :-)

  6. I like what you do with the dishes as you wash them; cute game and imagination with them! I sometimes write blog posts in the shower, LOL, or get my best thinking done in there. I like how you decided not to be mundane about the mundane of life and add a touch of sparkle to them :)

    1. i am glad you appreciated my utensil game---my husband and i were talking about it today--and i was saying---how much those fork boys are going to have to change to become men---kinda like the opposite with deer---thanks!

  7. If you love the smell of clean laundry try what I do. Put the washed articles on a clothesline (It's a long rope tied on a post at either end)and secure them with clothespins. Then you get a natural god-given aroma made from sun and wind.
I have to wash dishes by hand BEFORE putting them in the machine, or they seem to come out dirtier than before. Best dish cleaner by me at the sink is the powder used for clothes plus a little ammonia.

  8. Oh gosh, I can't do any chore without simultaneously entertaining myself. I have attention deficit disorder, so I have trouble doing nearly anything for a long enough time. So I either listen to music or get really deep in thought about a creative project I'm working on... but not too deep in thought that I can't complete the task!

  9. Those are some great idea's. I used to shower everyday until my skin started drying out so bad I ended up scratching all day long. I now do every other day and that works better, however, I do find it to be a waste of my time. I love what you do when you dust, I have done that from time to time, but I can't be in a hurry.

I like that you took the mundane and made it into a interesting blog!

  11. I have to admit, I don't like doing mundane things. I guess things go faster if you let your mind wander.

  16. great post. :) mmh I never thought washing dishes would be really interesting until I read your post. I'm not very patient with washing dishes. Something to think about the next time it's my turn to clean them. :D

  17. That's a good way of elevating the mundane, Lynn.

Housework is like cooking, you either do it or pay someone else to. It's very nice that you can make it more pleasant. Music does that for me.

  18. oh yeah, i would pay someone if i could

  19. Dishes and laundry and picking up toys. I feel like my whole life is moving different objects around my house for different reasons only to do it again and again. Anything you can think of to make this repetition less painful is worth it.

  20. It doesn't matter how much I clean, it all resets itself to chaos.

  21. I find silverware the most annoying "dish" to wash. I'll have to try the silverware fix. Sounds quite interesting. Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

  22. You have a wonderful approach to the mundane, Lynn. My view is to see (or feel) the reward in routine tasks, which I guess is a form of gratitude.

  27. It's great how you focus on the here and now, Lynn. I use mundane time to brainstorm and think about my writing. The shower, cleaning and doing dishes are the easiest times. It's also when I get some fabulous ideas. :)

  33. Our Mundane lives, our comfort zone. and i don't know about the saner saner part, but any moment i have, no matter the chore, when i'm not talking to my kids - brain is constantly thinking about writing or goals.

    greta post!

  34. You replied to my comment about numbers and wondered how they 'float' around. They do so in much the same way you use reminisces whilst dusting (perish the thought).

When walking some distance I often add up the numbers on car registration plates and juggle them around looking for sequences or anomalies.

I forget peoples names easily but I never forget a telephone number.... I just can't remember who I'm calling.

    1. hahaha that's hilarious---now i will so forget the phone numbers but probably can repeat our entire conversation we had on the phone---love the floating numbers idea :)
